Biography:
Magee enters his second season with the Portland Timbers in 2010, and serves as an assistant coach for the first team as well as the club's director of soccer development. As the director of soccer development, Magee, 37, oversees the club’s Premier Development League team, called the Timbers U-23s, and all camps programs.
In 2010, Magee will assume a larger role on the coaching staff to allow current head coach and general manager Gavin Wilkinson to fulfill his responsibilities as technical director for the Timbers MLS franchise, which is set to begin in 2011.
A native of St. Paul, Minn., Magee had a successful 13-year playing career with the Minnesota Thunder (1991-2004) and also played parts of three seasons in Major League Soccer for the Tampa Bay Mutiny (2000-01) and Chicago Fire (2001-02). Magee tallied 64 goals and 39 assists during his time with the Thunder, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer. He guided Minnesota to six finals appearances and the USL First Division Championship in 1999. He was named the game’s MVP after recording two assists in the Thunder’s 2-1 win over Rochester to claim the title. Following his playing days, Magee was inducted into the Minnesota Thunder Hall of Fame in 2005, and is a member of the United Soccer Leagues Hall of Fame Class of 2008. He was also inducted into the Wesleyan University (CT) Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008; Magee is the school’s all-time leading scorer.
Magee joined the coaching ranks in 2004, and was an assistant coach for the Thunder for two seasons, including the 2004 season as a player/coach, before being named Minnesota’s head coach in 2006. He coached the Thunder for nearly three seasons (2006-08) before joining the Timbers staff.
Magee’s coaching credentials also includes time with the U.S. Maccabi Men’s Open Team as both an assistant and head coach. As the head coach, Magee, who holds a USSF ‘A’ coaching license, guided the team to the gold medal in the 2008 Pan-American Maccabi Games in Argentina. |
